On the bright side ...

Almost every cloud has a silver lining.

  • Only 357 days remain until Bush leaves office.

  • Bush has delivered his last State of the Union.

  • It's a near-certainty that the next President of the United States will be able to pronounce the word nuclear correctly.

I saw Idiocracy for the first time yesterday and when they couldn't say nuclear I thought of him immediately. Also it made me weep for the future. >.<;;

I feel your pain. With all the cell phone "u BFF?" kiddies unable to type English, I doubt they could spell nuclear, either.

Why does this issue bother people so much?

During his entire presidency, and repeatedly during his Nobel acceptance speech, Jimmy Carter pronounced it 'NEW-KEY-YER' and no one said ANYTHING. I've certainly never heard you bemoan it.

Plenty of smart people mispronounce words. For years I pronounced 'open' with an 'm' ... 'ohmpen.' Blacks across the intellectual spectrum 'aks' questions. If you'd forgive Bush this small thing if only you agreed with his politics, why bring it up?

I swear on a stack of Neil Gaiman books that I've never heard Carter pronounce the word. I did not see his acceptance speech.

I would still notice this oddity even if I agreed with his politics. Remember what I do for a living. :) The inner editrix can only be contained for so long, although I do give people some leeway for accents.

The primary problem is that, like so many other things, it goes back to what I believe is a fundamental personality trait for Bush: significant difficulty in admitting that he has made a mistake (we've had this discussion before).

I had a word I had to consciously think about saying -- but I did so, and now it isn't usually a problem. I knew it was a minor verbal hurdle, and I dealt with it. Not a big deal. Why can't/won't the president do the same thing?

I suspect there may be some J/P aspects to this.
