Oscar nominations

Thirteen for Fellowship, but somehow, I'm still ticked off.

Ian McKellen - Best Supporting Actor, Peter Jackson - Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Makeup, Best Score, Best Song, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects

First off, while I enjoyed McKellen, the man's already got his Oscar. Yes, he was good, but so were many of the other cast members. Where is Sean Astin's nomination? Where is Sean Bean's nod? Where is Christopher Lee? Also, sorry, but Fellowship really doesn't deserve a nod, much less a win, for adapted screenplay: they added some pure cheese to Tolkien's work. ("You have my bow . . . sword . . . axe . . . " - well, at least the sword and axe are useful for slicing cheddar.) :/ More of my nattering on the movie here. And, frankly, I'd like to see Lynch win for Mulholland, not that it's my favorite work of his, but as more of a lifetime achievement recognition of his brilliance.

Hedwig was completely ignored. It didn't even get included for music, much less John Cameron Mitchell's truly remarkable performance. :( Supporting Actress actually has some decent competition: Dame Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Connelly, Kate Winslet and Marisa Tomei. First four are certainly all worthy I know; I'm not familiar with Tomei's work, so can't comment.

Why was Memento so neglected? I know it came out near the beginning of last year, so the voters have had time to let it fade from memory (maybe they should have had it tattooed it on their bodies ;) ), but it was quite a compelling film, I thought.

I should be happy that Fellowship wasn't snubbed any more than it was, but just one year, just one year of my life, I'd like to see the Academy go my way. :(

Not a thing to do with that, but there's a very interesting study on EverQuest players here that my husband sent me. I don't play the game, but it's interesting data nevertheless. I don't know how relevant it is to DAoC, given the number of women who flamed the EQ artist in person (yes, she was there) on a list I'm on - they pretty much point-blank told her they refused to play the game because of the art, and well, I didn't flame her, but I was honest.
