... it's also that he's an embarrassment. The tackiness, the faux pas, the sheer inappropriateness ... it burns just to look at it. Surely Barbara taught him better than this?

German chancellor gets uninvited backrub from Bush

People of Germany, I'm sorry. I voted against him and I'm still mortified. I get totally squinchy over big breaches of etiquette from those who oughta know how to behave (or at least who should've been coached by handlers).

Eww. Eww, eww, eww. Just eww.

Evidently he learned how to be inappropriate from babs:

W is a total embarrassment but not only him his Secretary of State who chose to continue shoe shopping and going to see a Broadway play during Hurricane katrina. All I can say is that she is 4 heart beats away from the presidency in her current post. Three if you don't count Cheney but that is a whole other discussion.

I agree with you on Condi, but I listened to the entire transcript of the Barbara Bush interview from NPR. While it was an incredibly bad choice of words that makes her look horrible out of context (and believe me, I'm no defender of the Bush family), it was, while still not a shining example of oratory, not quite as bad in context.

The somewhat lengthy interview was done on-site, and in the context of the talk, she's trying to praise the rescue workers' efforts and express compassion for the Katrina victims. Here's a link if you want to hear the whole thing (requires RealPlayer). Again, I'm not saying that it wasn't bad, I'm just saying that, trying to be fair, it appears from the interview to be more tactless than anything else. I'm not even trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, I just know as a former journalist how easily one sentence can get bandied about. :)

I actually heard it before but my RealPlayer won't allow it now. I'll have to try it on LA's computer later. I had a lot of respect for Barbara Bush before she was so tactless. I was so disappointed and it was on the heels of so much else; Condi and W were both dragging returning from their respective vacations concerning Hurricane Katrina. I suppose it just was another nail in the coffin for my opinion of the Bush Family/Adminstration. I do agree the press can blow things out of proportion but it goes to show how very careful you must be in the public eye because one statement can land your foot in your mouth.

The whole episode was really sickening to me and I doubt history will be kind to W.
