Dog Day Afternoon

Finally got around to watching Dog Day Afternoon this past Sunday. It was interesting, but despite Pacino's excellent performance, I found it fairly dated. Coincidentally, the last movie I saw was 12 Angry Men, also directed by Sidney Lumet. It's the older of the two, and yet I found it to be much more timeless.

This is not to say that Lumet's craftsmanship is not present: I thought the use of the mob as Greek chorus was a nice touch. Sonny is quite the interesting character study: he seems to want to please everyone, and yet, it's a little hard to determine the "real" Sonny, given that so much of what we see seems to be the con man.
