If you play computer games, and particularly if you're a fan of Will Wright's games (really, the creator of the best-selling game of all time should need no Wikipedia link for anyone reading this journal, but I'll be thorough), you'll want to see this video. Be patient: it starts a bit slowly, but it's worth it.

He's such a genius. Some people see the big picture. Wright sees the whole picture. I don't know if he's ever taken the MBTI, but I'll bet his N is right off the charts.

I was lucky enough to get a one on one demo of Spore at E3 last year (being one of the E3 Critics Awards judges has got some serious perks). The game was the sole bright spot for me at the show, after being subjected to a seemingly endless treadmill of World War 2 games and gang-themed games. The GDC conference show in that video was so crowded that you - literally - could not get into the room. They tried to set up monitors in the hallway to accommdate the crowds there, but all we could see was the video.

In person, even in its early stages, the game was terrific. And playing it was a joy (another perk of said judgeship). I'll be mildly surprised if it comes out this year (we should get better indications later this month at GDC), but I know Will has the political power of EA to get extra time to get things right.

I pity the marketing department, though. How on earth do you sum this game up in a single, catchy phrase?

Spore: It'll grow on you.

:D Okay, so there's a reason I'm not in marketing. Lucky you on getting in on the demo, and congratulations on your judgeship!

I took an unapproved video of his demonstration of Spore at GDC last March. It was quite impressive then.

I am woefully behind on my games. Between basic errands, cooking, social activities, Netflix, and World of Warcraft, I just haven't had the time to explore some of the great stuff that's out there. So many games; so little time!

I'll make time for this one, though.
