The original Kong, animated one last time

From MetaFilter. I thought this was pretty neat:

Peter Jackson, Bob Burns, and the original King Kong

It's amazing how much a talented animator can do with just bones . . . how much he or she can convey of the mien, stature, and attitude of a gorilla.

Only tangentially related to that (they're both movies), but if you wanna see Serenity on the big screen one last time before it leaves theaters, best get yourself there in a hurry. FireflyFans.net reports the following:

Serenity is down to #15 in total theater count:

871 theaters
-838 change from last week

The question now is, is it enough? It's made $24M through yesterday, which means, presumably, that it could potentially break even in DVD sales. I'm not sure that's going to be sufficient to push it over the top.

I just finished watching the series again this weekend. I found myself thinking that, if we only get one film, Joss did an admirable job of wrapping things up; if you think of the series and the film as one major arc, it works, at least as well as can be expected.

In other Joss news, I have been chuckling a lot lately over Principal Flutie's replacement's observation that 'that's the kind of liberal, wooly-headed thinking that leads to being eaten.' I can't *wait* to drop the line in a political debate.

I have no idea if it is enough or not. All I can do is remember that we've gotten this far on pretty much a wing and a prayer, and hope it'll take us a little farther in the form of two more movies. It did get a truly impressive amount of critical acclaim, which, frankly, surprised me. I didn't think the critics would get it, so if it does manage to break even with DVD sales (which I think it will), the studios might greenlight future films as a vanity project.

How far are you into the Buffy discs? :)

We're through the first season on Buffy. We also watched the film (yuck). I was all up in arms about continuity issues when I happened across the note in IMDb that says Joss declared the series to be a spin-off of the unfilmed original screenplay. Take that, canon nazis!

To twist the Serenity knife a bit, Doom opened at #1 this weekend, making almost as much money in three days as Serenity made in 10. I hate to say it, but the detail Joss missed was getting an A-list actor to play the villain. As good as Chiwetel Ejiofor was, what Joss should have done is shopped around for a Rock-equivalent who he could get for cheap after converting them to a browncoat.

I just found out that it has made over $33 million at this point. It's still not quite out of theaters, and the DVD is coming soon. I think it can still make its necessary total to break even, and maybe even show a little profit.

Yeah, I don't care for the Buffy movie.

Um, I would not have wanted to see The Rock in Serenity. Who would you suggest instead of Ejiofor?
