I played on the beta. It's kinda a mixed bag.


Character Design.
Not as indepth as City of Heroes (what is), but you can mix and matches a good number of clothes to give a character a fairly unique feel while still feeling like you're a part of the Matrix Universe.

Visuals. The game looks like great. Fight scenes aren't static "I swing my fist again and again" type animations, but rather dynamic and your opponent responds to your actions. If you punch and miss, the opponent might sweep you off your feet, grab your arm throw you to the ground, or other cool Matrix-y stuff.

Classless character design. I like things like classes/archetypes/whatever, but sometimes it's cool to have an open plate to do what you want. The game is basically skilled based. You can head off to certain branches (soldier, patcher, assassin) but you don't have to limit yourself to one branch, though obviously specializing has its benefits too as you have a limit based on your level of how much memory you can store all that in. Also (and this is what I was told, I didn't really do it in beta so I don't know how well it works) if your group overlaps too much (all healers or whatever, for example), you can go to a hardline and switch out abilties.


Buggy. I had a lot of broken missions, where you would go to where you were supposed to and an NPC wouldn't spawn. And heavily populated areas would cause my computer to laagggg. It would also you "Neo vision" when you log in where everything is textured with green text before it fades to the normal game, but it seemed to take five minutes before that faded sometimes and it caused additional lag, and I couldn't find an option to turn that off. I've heard performance has improved on release though.

Vague. I don't think the tutorial really gives enough details. Some stuff just doesn't seem explained well enough. Some stats are worded so that you don't know if raising it will be beneficial in the areas you want. It took me a while to figure out the abilities thing. I like stuff like this spelled out for me, especially if you have a tutorial like this game.

Billing. This part I can't vouch for as I don't have the full game itself. But my understanding is that you can't cancel your account from the web. You have to either call a number or petition in game to do so. Perhaps this might be trivial to you, but I like to try MMORPGs for the free month and then decide if I want to stat or not. I don't want to have to call someone and have them try to sell me on staying an extra month or whatever.

Overall I'm tempted to try the full game when I got a bit of extra cash. But I'm not as eager to get this as I was City of Heroes though.

You're marvelous. Thank you: that was just the sort of information I was seeking.

I've heard from others who participated in the beta that it was rather buggy. What I haven't heard is whether they've fixed many of those issues since going live.

I love the idea of classless character design.

The billing part sounds like bad news if that's true, but here it says: Edit your existing Master Account information. This option will allow you change your contact, billing, or game information. I don't know if that means that you can just change your billing cycle/credit card information, or if it will actually let you cancel. It'd be bizarre for the company to not offer an online cancellation option, as that's been standard in most of the MMOs I've played.

I'm curious about it, though. I've downloaded and watched the movies from the site, and it looks interesting. Maybe I'll let it mature a bit more, though. :)

It's possible that the cancel feature might have been temporarily shut down for one reason or another and the person who I heard it from (on a message board) might have just tried to cancel it at a bad time.

Is it out? I didn't realize it was already. I looked at the download page, and there's lots of movies. Some seem to be gameplay ones.

I'll definitely have to check back with you here to see what people say.

I've been playing since the beta, and it's gotten better as far as stability and bugginess goes. I think the reason people perceive it as being buggy is because it is constantly being updated with new live content. Doesn't leave much time for testing. But they have a "live events" team that actually plays the main characters, such as Morpheus, Agent Gray, the Merovingian, etc. These people are real characters that interact freely with the players. It's pretty cool to have an Agent come up to you and give you orders. But in terms of bugginess, I haven't run into any real showstoppers.

The character system, is great, in my humble opinion. If you had the time, in-game money, and inclination, you could get every skill and max it out. But basically, you have the loadout area where you can pick your skills before you go in. If you need to change skills, you find a hardline and just swap them out. My favorite part really.

The Neo Vision thing is a placeholder when you first load up. The textures don't finish loading by the time you get into the matrix, so you get the code while they continue to load. No way to turn that off.

I'm playing on the Linenoise server as Varis, if any of y'all want to look me up.

Oh, one more thing: the game has a built in media player...so if you don't like the game music you can just type "/radio play D:" if you have a CD or MP3 CD loaded. Personally, I listen to Radio Free Zion. http://www.radiofreezion.com Here's hoping to see some of you there.

Wonderful to see you! I have wondered how you've been doing.

I like the idea of the live events, and the bit about swapping skills out.

I'll likely give it a spin when I'm done with City of Heroes.

Jason D very kindly passed along a trial code to me, so I'll be giving it a spin between the 20th and the 29th. I'm downloading the patch now (let's hope it runs).
