Knife lust

This chef's knife costs about twice as much as all of our Henckels combined.

But . . . but . . . it never needs sharpening . . . and Ming Tsai uses one, and it's so pretty, and it's used to prepare food, so it has purpose and functionality . . .

Buy it. Practicality is bourgeois!

OOoh
And it's ceramic and wood, so you could hijack an airplane with it!

Not that you'd ever want to do that . . . I'm just saying. ;)

Re: OOoh
Love ya, twr. :) I had dinner with the Chief Medical Examiner for the state of Georgia once after a speaking engagement where he'd rolled this beautiful collection of leather-cased Solingen knives out on the table for display. He gets a kick out of having the credentials to pass through airport security with those babies. Perks of the job, I guess. :D

Re: OOoh
Seriously, though . . . never needs sharpening would be really nice. The only drawback (aside from the obvious price issue--I mean hell, I only have cutco knives because of price issues) that might stop me is that I know I am, at times, clumsy. Metal knives will not shatter when I drop them. Would this one?

Re: OOoh
Supposedly not, and I'm inclined to believe them. The knives would never have gained any sort of popularity if they did, I shouldn't think.

*grins* Regrettably, the aforementioned inner child is not the one who would be buying it, seeing as how the lazy git has neither her own credit card nor her own job. :D

I think I am going to take theano's suggestion, though, and go see if my local Cook's Warehouse has one so I can test it for weight and balance. :)

Hmm. Now I want one too. Check out the box it comes in:

But, for the price, I'd like to try it first and feel if the balance and handle suit me.

btw, Happy Birthday!

That's a good idea. Hmmm. I'm wondering where in my locality I could test drive one? I'll have to call Cook's Warehouse and see if they carry such a thing.

And thank you kindly for the birthday wishes!
