Memorable film quotes

The American Film Institute has just distributed a ballot with 400 nominated quotes (PDF format) to determine what entertainment industry leaders consider to be the most memorable movie lines of all time.

Terrance, you'll be happy to know that Margo Channing's "fasten your seatbelts" line made it to the list. Unfortunately, nothing from the stellar Lion in Winter appears, to my surprise. No "In a world where carpenters get resurrected, anything is possible"? No "I'd hang you from the nipples, but you'd shock the children" ? No "I made Louis take me on Crusade. I dressed my women as Amazons and we rode bare-breasted halfway to Damascus. Louis had a seizure, and I damn near died of windburn... but the troops were dazzled.", either.

No "Son, you got a panty on your head," from Raising Arizona?

Only one quote from The Princess Bride in the list. There are quite a few quotes on it that, in my opinion, don't deserve to be included. However, they did get Roy Batty's "tears in the rain" quote from Blade Runner in there, and quite a few from Casablanca, though they missed: "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!" "Your winnings, sir." "Oh, thank you very much." Also "You betcha!" from Fargo, hee, and of course "May the Force be with you."

And yes, LOTR fans, "my precious," is on there. Though, personally, I find myself thinking of Gandalf's Fellowship line during times of adversity: "So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." That one wasn't on the list that I saw.

Nevertheless, It's a fun read.

You know, I've never actually seen it. It was performed at my hometown community theater, but I was maybe five years old at the time, I think, so I wouldn't have been the target audience. :)

When Wayne's World gets two quotes and Night of the Hunter and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf only get one apiece, you know we're fucked. ;-)

Good point! And neither Wayne's World quote was my favorite. I thought the funniest moment was "Have you seen this boy?" I love referential humor. :) Well, referential anything, pretty much, when it's actually referential and not a rip-off.

Virginia Woolf surely deserved more representation in the list, I agree.
