Maybe we need to change the terminology . . .

Seems there's just lots to post about today. My source on this one is MetaFilter, but I have more than a passing acquaintance with the Bob Jones U. folks from my time attending Governor's School at nearby Furman in Greenville, South Carolina.

You know, there are some very religious folks who are mighty good at taking the "Christ" out of the word "Christian." Maybe we need a new word - Old Testamentalists or something, 'cause sometimes the fire and brimstone sounds like they've never read the teachings of the kindly Christ who offered hope to the hopeless, forgiveness to the sinner, and compassion to all.

This letter from university president Bob Jones the Third (posted unabashedly on the Bob Jones U. web site) sounds like he's pretty reluctant about refraining from burning the heretics.

Tell me, what will it look like if Bush leaves "an imprint for righteousness upon this nation," eh? Dictionary.com defines the term imprint as a verb, with the primary definition being "To produce (a mark or pattern) on a surface by pressure." I tend not to think of that word in a positive light. Matter of fact, "leaving a mark" often refers to welts and bruises from beatings. As I recall, Christ wasn't in the habit of dishing those out, Mr. Jones. He was generally the sort to advocate turning the other cheek. The folks who crucified Him surely left imprints, didn't they?

"Compassionate conservatism," indeed.
