Well, it appears that someone finally figured out that banning something would only make people more curious about it; too bad they didn't think about that before suggesting it. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, as the saying goes. The assistance from Jimmy C. probably helped move the wheels along.

Kathy Cox backs down on evolution in Georgia schools

I posted on her attempt to remove the term from Georgia textbooks here.

7:47pm addendum: Carl Zimmer weighed in as well. I heard him on NPR tonight. Fascinating stuff on the way ancient philosophers and scientists viewed the brain's functions.

I love her recent argument that she wasn't trying to remove the word evolution, just replace it was the phrase "biological changes over time." I honestly can't tell if she was trying to appease the biology radicals that don't want to teach evolution, or aid them!

Oh my gosh, Joan, I initially thought the exact same thing! I was like "Is she trying to be clever with careful wording, with plans to tell Jim Bob the Creationist that "we aren't teaching evolution in Georgia schools, only discussing biological changes over time," so that those folks wouldn't bug science teachers and principals and let schools get on with their work?

However, disappointingly, I read a little more about her, and rumor has it that she's something of a neo-Prohibitionist, so her heart wasn't exactly in a scientifically-enlightened place, from what I understand, or if it was, she apparently doesn't exactly have the track record to back it up.

Yeah, I'm glad that saner heads won out. I don't recall the exact wording of my biology text, but I know we were taught that there are LOTS of theories, the big bang and evolution being only one and that people's personal religion often held alternate theories and it was up to us to decide what we wanted to believe!

I think any time you limit the options because you think the people you are teaching are too stupid to make their own decisions you are treading onto very thin ice! Though I suppose we still do it with the electoral college!
