Salt as home decor

I found these Himalayan salt lamps at Harry's Farmers Market in Alpharetta:

04-09-2010: Himalayan Salt Lamps

I didn't purchase one, but I'm thinking about it. They supposedly have numerous health benefits - everything from improving air quality to reducing the impact of Seasonal Affective Disorder - but I just liked them for aesthetic reasons. They remind me a bit of rose quartz.

I have a salt lamp, and I adore it. I don't believe that they do anything, but they give a nice muted light that works great when you're watching a movie and need just a little light. I have on at least one occasion, however, had to tell my boyfriend not to lick the lamp.

That actually sounds great for our basement. They don't crumble in humidity or anything, do they?

They don't crumble, but you may find some salt residue on the base from time to time. It just wipes away. It will take absolutely ages for it to do anything really noticeable to the lamp, I would imagine. They're pretty thick!
