South Africa's Rape Crisis: 1 in 4 Men Say They've Done It (Source: Time Magazine)

One in four. Admitted, which means that the real number is probably higher. Think about it: if you visited South Africa, you could not avoid giving money in some capacity to a rapist -- he could work at the hotel in which you were sleeping, serve your meal at a restaurant, or drive your taxi. The article indicates that you might be more likely to encounter a rapist at that tier, as "the men most likely to rape, the researchers found, were not the poorest, but those who had attained some level of education and income."

South Africa has one of the highest incidents of reported rape in the world. The most recent statistics show that 36,190 cases of rape were reported to the police between April and December 2007, though experts believe that number only accounts for one out of nine cases. But the number of rape cases that make it to court — let alone result in a conviction — are far fewer.
