Amazon Kindle

Thanks to Terrance over at The Republic of T. for spreading the word about the Amazon Kindle.

While I rarely buy the first generation of anything, this sounds interesting once they get some of the kinks worked out (both in the tech arena and the pricing structures), and once the price comes down a bit. I think this will have broader market appeal than the Sony Reader because of Amazon's built-in clientele and distribution association.

Neil Gaiman comments in his blog, here, about the device. He says that it's easy to load your own content.

I'm not ready to buy (I'd definitely like to see a color screen, for example), but I'll be curious to see how it evolves.

This kind of thing is exciting, particularly for those of use in the library world. My gut feeling though is that this isn't it. What I think will eventually take off is something about that size that is entirely screen, the keyboard in this design is just a bad idea. What I think will eventually work is something like this will the entire portion being a screen and an on-screen keyboard similar to the iPhone. That's at the very least, it may be something else though.

I'm glad you responded! I think it's essential that those who are actively involved with libraries be part of the dialogue in developing such a device.

I agree that the keyboard segment could use some work. Some people have suggested a sliding keyboard, like you see on many cell phones, and I like that idea.
