Finished Carnivale

Finished Carnivale; it's a shame that it was cancelled. However, I want to be very careful about what I say about it because of all the symbolism and foreshadowing in it: I don't want to spoil anyone.

It's set during the Great Depression, and follows two major intertwined plot lines, with subplots here and there. A young man, Ben Hawkins, is picked up by a traveling carnival after his mother's death; meanwhile, a preacher named Brother Justin fights against the prejudice of "not in my backyard" businessmen who want to prevent his new ministry for the poor.

That's the most basic, unadorned synopsis. In truth, the series becomes a mystical, layered journey with a strange fight between light and darkness; the crow vs. the dove, but things are not always as they appear to be. There are fortune tellers, bearded women, hoochie-coochie dancers, radio announcers, and more. Hub and I both liked it very much.

If you see it, you may want to read the following Wikipedia entries afterward:

Carnivale
Ben Hawkins
Brother Justin Crowe

Some day I'll see the end of this series. We avidly watched the first season and most of the second. We will be down your way soon if you'd like to meet up.

We would, but there may be obstacles. Good obstacles, but ... well, I just e-mailed Tag and explained.
