New Who

So I watched my very first episode of Doctor Who last night. Yeah, I know, I'm late to the party on that one. I've seen the first two episodes of SciFi's broadcast. It was okay. I wasn't immediately engaged (though I liked Eccleston), but I'm willing to give it a little more time to see if it becomes a regular thing.

Did you ever watch the old series? Dan was a big fan as a kid so I've seen my fair share of old episodes. The thing about the new series is that you have to go into it knowing that it's supposed to be a bit campy. There are so many little throw backs to the old series, even the music, that wouldn't be all that obvious, or funny, if you hadn't seen the old one. Half the time I don't even get them, but Dan will start laughing and have to back up the tivo to see it again...and then explain it to me!

I never really had the chance to see the old series. I suppose I can Netflix it if this one ends up grabbing me. My husband has seen former incarnations of the show, so I suppose he can serve as my Who encyclopedia if I have a question. :)

I'm a fan of the original, and watched the first two episodes of the new one last week. I posted a mini-review at the time. I share Joan's observation - it has a lot of throwbacks to the original show that might not be apparent to someone new to the characters and premise. You're correct that it will probably have to stand on its own in order to get a new audience. I think it stands a shot - based on last week's two-episode premier, I'll be tuning in again tonight.

D. also watched the original series. I did read your review, I just didn't feel qualified to comment since I hadn't seen it at that point.

As someone looking at the program with fresh eyes, I like the guy playing the doctor well enough, but I'm not sure how meaningful that is because I don't have anyone to compare him with.

D. is following it, so I'll likely tag along for the ride. See you tomorrow! I'm all like "Crud, it feels like we haven't seen them in ages. I need a J&T fix." :)
